My family and church, well know my growing dislike of Christmas. The culturally enforced repetition of excess, overspending and consumer debt are part of it. Having 3 months of my year with TV, advertising, and my inbox full of Christmas vapidity are other reasons. I love advent, and remembering the coming of God to earth in Christ, and will seek to redeem the period with that, along with time with family and rest from work.
I could attempt some theological and cultural critique of how Christmas is a 3 month consumer festival, the high religious point of the consumer year, it's gods demanding strict and compulsory worship and conformity. But to do that would require...well more attention to Christmas.
So I was glad to see my friend Krish Kandiah's has written an article for Christianity Magazine about the forced repetition of Christmas.
