Fascinating programmed on BBC Radio 4, part of the Beyond Belief Series. Todays episode was the first programme in the series looked at the traditions and divisions of Judaism and asked the question: what makes a Jew? Is it religious practice? Correct belief? Or is it merely a matter of birth? It's an issue which goes to the heart of the Jewish community.
I listened in when they were discussing the place of reformed, orthodox, and extreme orthodox Judaism in response to modernity. So many issues so relevant the place of christianity and it's response to modernity and post-modernity.
Other topics up for debate in the forthcoming series include a focus on Russian Orthodoxy; an investigation into the existence of the religious gene, the so-called "God spot"; and a programme called "Secularism - is it the new religion?".
